MOUNTAIN VIEW, California — October 23, 2026. This original California58 Local report is based on an identified public agency record. Proposals, meeting notices, campaign material and estimated outcomes are carefully distinguished from decisions and certified results.
What is before voters?
Mountain View’s city election information identifies a transient occupancy tax proposal as Measure F. The ballot wording would authorize the City Council to increase the existing levy on hotel and short-term rental stays from 10% to a maximum of 15%. The city estimates a potential increase of up to $5.2 million per year. That is an estimate, not money already collected.
Who pays the tax?
A transient occupancy tax is paid by qualifying guests using local lodging, though businesses generally administer its collection and remittance. The city describes potential uses for general municipal services such as streets, sidewalks, emergency response and parks. Voters should read the impartial analysis to determine whether revenue is legally restricted to a particular purpose or remains part of the general fund.
Does a yes vote immediately create a 15% rate?
Not necessarily. The city’s explanation says approval would authorize a rate as high as 15%, but staff would return to City Council after the election to consider what rate to adopt. A voter authorization differs from a separate council implementation decision. A no vote would not provide that newly proposed authorization.
